Here is a\u00a0showcase of the recent\u00a0project that was successfully accomplished for awareness about\u00a0Gharial Conservation.\"Indian<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The National Chambal Sanctuary, also called the National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary, is a 5,400 sq km (2,100 sq mi) tri-state protected area in northern India for the critically endangered Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus<\/em>), also known as the gavial, the red-crowned roof turtle and the endangered Ganges river dolphin. Located on the Chambal River near the tripoint of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, it was first declared in Madhya Pradesh in 1978 and now constitutes a long narrow Eco-reserve co-administered by the three states. Within the sanctuary the pristine Chambal River cuts through mazes of ravines and hills with many sandy beaches.<\/p>\n

This place is very remote and\u00a0the tribal villages surrounding the river needed to be education about the value of flora and fauna around them. The locals have very strong beliefs about\u00a0various Folklore and Myths\u00a0about the animals of the\u00a0Chambal Sanctuary that have been passed by generations. These myths had a negative impact on the conservation of the flora and fauna of the\u00a0Chambal Sanctuary.<\/p>\n

Some of the common myths consisted of:
\nGharials are released here by the British people\u00a0to keep the tribal away!
\nThe\u00a0Sanctuary is a private property of the British where they farm Gharials!
\nSnake bites can be cured by singing mantras and dusting of holy powder!
\nGharials need to be killed as they are harmful to mankind!
\nThe Chambal river is said to have originated from the blood of cows sacrificed by an\u00a0Ayran King, thus everything associated with it is \u201cunholy\u201d! (This myth in turn also helped in a certain way to keep the people away from the habitat)<\/p>\n

Below are some interesting things\u00a0from the project.<\/p>\n

To start with, a\u00a0small story was developed\u00a0about\u00a0a traveler who stops for a night in the Chambal village and\u00a0in his dream he encounters\u00a0a personified Gharial character. They discuss and explain all the various Folklore and Myths, along with explaining all the\u00a0problems\u00a0faced by the\u00a0Chambal River and its Fauna.<\/p>\n

A character was designed to look like the natives, as that would make the villagers identify with him. Above are some draft sketches.<\/p><\/div>\n
